Network access control

Network access control

Network access control forms part of the comprehensive communication infrastructure security. Network access control ensures end user authentication before connecting to the network, whether by wire, wireless or VPN connection.

Network access control may be implemented in several ways and several authentications may be done – user authentication and end device authentication, name service affiliation check (e.g. Microsoft Active Directory) as well as end user status check (presence of local antivirus, OS patch status and alike).

Such checks make it possible to define the policy to be applied – providing total network access, providing limited network access (e.g. only internet access) or disabling any network access.
